How Much Wax You're Going to Need for Your Project

Making candles? Don't let wax measurements scare you! If you've ever wondered how much wax you really need for your candle-making projects, you're in the right place.

In this blog, I'm going to walk you through a super handy guide to figure out exactly how much wax you need for any project. Trust me, it's easier than it sounds, and I've got all the tips to make it a breeze.

1. Measuring Your Wax

Start by measuring your wax. For instance, one pound of wax (16 ounces) is a standard starting point. Choose a wax type suitable for your project; Freedom Soy Wax is a popular choice for its ease of use.

2. Melting the Wax

Melt your wax using a method you're comfortable with – a melter, microwave, or double boiler. Soy wax, known for its ease of melting, is a good choice for beginners.

3. Measuring Liquid Wax

Next, calculate how much wax you need for your specific project. For example, if you're making candles using 15-ounce jars, you might want to fill each with about 12 to 12.5 ounces of wax, leaving some space at the top. Multiply the amount of wax per jar by the number of jars to get the total wax needed. In my case, for three jars, I needed 37.5 ounces of wax.

4. Calculating Wax for Your Project

5. Determining the Total Wax Needed

To find out how much solid wax you need, divide the total amount of wax required for your jars by the amount you get from one pound. This will tell you how many pounds of wax are needed for your project. For my three jars needing 37.5 ounces of wax, I needed just over two pounds of Freedom Soy Wax.

6. Adding Fragrance

If you’re adding fragrance, now is the time. For my project, I used 2.25 ounces of fragrance oil, which is 6 percent of the total amount of wax. Remember to mix the fragrance thoroughly and gently into the wax. The key here is to avoid air bubbles and ensure the fragrance oil is fully blended.

7. Pouring the Wax into Jars

Carefully pour the wax into your jars. Take your time and be cautious, especially if you have a full pot. It’s good to pour over a tray to catch any spillage.

Conclusion: Your Guide to Perfect Candles

And that’s it! By following these steps, you can accurately measure and prepare the wax for your candle making projects. It’s a simple yet effective way to ensure you always have the right amount of wax, resulting in beautifully made candles every time.

Extra Tips

Always conduct a test melt to understand how your specific type of wax behaves. For a more intense fragrance, adjust the percentage of fragrance oil according to the wax’s capacity. Practice makes perfect. Don’t be discouraged if it doesn't turn out perfect the first time.
