Candle Making How To: A Step-by-Step Guide to Your First Candle
Most candle making how to guides say the same four things: melt wax, add scent, add wick, pour. Follow them to the letter and your first candle can still tunnel down the middle, smell like nothing, or crack across the top overnight.
The problem is not that those guides are wrong. It is that they leave out the numbers. How much wax fills this jar? How much fragrance for that much wax? Which wick for that diameter? At what temperature does each step happen? Without those answers you are not following a recipe. You are guessing with materials that cost money.
This guide fixes that. It walks through one complete candle from empty jar to finished product, with real quantities, real temperatures, and the maths you need to scale it to any container you own. Follow it once and you will have a working candle. Follow it three times and you will understand candle making well enough to start designing your own.
Before You Start: What This Guide Assumes
We are making a single 8 oz straight-sided glass container candle in soy wax. That combination is the standard starting point for a reason. Soy is forgiving, straight-sided jars make wick sizing predictable, and 8 oz is large enough to burn properly but small enough that a failed batch is not painful.
Everything here scales. Once the process makes sense, the same steps apply to a 16 oz jar, a tin, or a batch of twelve.
Set aside about forty minutes of active time. The candle itself then needs a full day to set and one to two weeks to cure before you judge it.
Step 1: Work Out How Much Wax You Need
This is where most beginners either buy far too little or waste half a bag.
Wax is sold by weight, but jars are measured by volume, so you need to convert. The reliable method is water displacement:
- Fill your empty jar with water to about 1 cm below where you want the finished wax level to sit.
- Pour that water onto a scale and note the weight in grams.
- Multiply by 0.86. That is your wax weight in grams.
The 0.86 figure accounts for wax being less dense than water. For a typical 8 oz jar you will land somewhere around 200 g of wax.
Do this once per jar style and write it down. You will never have to calculate it again for that container.
For the wax itself, a container-grade soy is what you want for this project. Pillar and mould waxes are formulated to shrink and release from a form, which is exactly the opposite of what a jar candle needs. Browse the soy wax range and check the product notes for "container" before you buy.
Step 2: Work Out Your Fragrance Load
Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil relative to your wax weight. It is calculated on the wax, not on the finished candle.
For soy, 8 percent is a sensible starting point. The formula:
Wax weight × 0.08 = fragrance weight
So 200 g of wax needs 16 g of fragrance oil.
Weigh it. Do not measure fragrance by volume, and do not use spoons. Fragrance oils vary in density, so 16 g is 16 g regardless of what it looks like in a measuring cup. A digital scale accurate to one gram is the single most important tool in candle making, and it costs less than a bag of wax.
Choosing an oil formulated specifically for wax also matters more than beginners expect. Oils built for candles are engineered to bind with wax and vaporize cleanly once lit, which is why the fragrance oils you use should come from a supplier who tests them in candle applications.
Step 3: Choose Your Wick
Wick sizing depends on three things: your container diameter, your wax, and your fragrance load. Change any one and the correct wick may change with it.
Measure the widest interior point of your jar. For a standard 8 oz straight-sided jar that is usually around 7 cm. Most manufacturer wick charts will then point you to a specific size within a wick family.
Here is the part the charts will not tell you: treat that recommendation as a starting point, not an answer. Fragrance oil affects how the wax melts, so two candles in identical jars with different scents can need different wicks.
The practical approach for a first project is to buy three adjacent sizes from the same family and test all three. Pre-tabbed container candle wicks come with the metal base already attached, which saves you a step and keeps the wick sitting flat.
Step 4: Prepare the Jar
Your vessel needs to be clean, completely dry, and at room temperature. Cold glass is one of the main causes of wet spots, those cloudy patches where wax pulls away from the container wall.
Attach the wick tab to the exact centre of the jar base using a wick sticker or a small dot of hot glue. Press firmly. A wick that shifts during pouring will burn off-centre for the life of the candle, and there is no fixing it afterwards.
Set a wick centring bar across the top of the jar to hold the wick upright and straight while the wax sets.
If you are still deciding on containers, straight-sided candle jars are considerably easier to work with than tapered or curved shapes, because the melt pool diameter stays the same from the top of the candle to the bottom.
Step 5: Melt the Wax
Weigh your 200 g of wax into a pouring pitcher. Melt it using a double boiler, a wax melter, or a presto pot. Do not melt wax directly over an element and never leave it unattended.
Bring it to about 80°C. You want every flake fully liquid with no cloudy patches, because undissolved wax crystals affect how the candle sets.
Resist the urge to push the temperature higher to speed things up. Overheating damages the wax structure and there is no way to undo it.
Step 6: Add Fragrance at the Right Temperature
This is the step that separates a candle that smells strong from one that smells like a warm jar.
With the wax at roughly 80°C to 85°C, add your 16 g of fragrance oil. Then stir slowly and continuously for two full minutes.
Two minutes feels like a long time when you are standing over a pitcher. Do it anyway. Stirring is what physically binds the fragrance molecules into the wax, and thirty seconds of enthusiastic swirling does not accomplish the same thing. This is the cheapest quality improvement available to you and it costs nothing but patience.
One safety note: every fragrance oil has a flash point listed on its documentation. Always add fragrance below that temperature.
Step 7: Cool, Then Pour
Let the fragranced wax cool to around 60°C before pouring. Depending on your room this takes ten to twenty minutes. A probe or infrared thermometer takes the guesswork out.
Pouring too hot is the direct cause of sinkholes, surface cracks, and wet spots. Pouring too cool causes lumpy, uneven tops. The window is genuinely narrower than most tutorials suggest.
Pour in one slow, steady motion down the inside wall of the jar rather than straight onto the base. This reduces air bubbles and gives a cleaner finish.
Leave roughly 1 cm of headspace at the top.
Step 8: Leave It Completely Alone
Do not move the jar. Do not put it in the fridge to speed up setting. Do not fan it or touch the surface to check it.
Let it cool undisturbed at room temperature, ideally around 21°C, in a spot with no draft. Rapid or uneven cooling is what produces cracked tops and frosting.
Give it twenty-four hours before you touch it at all.
Step 9: Cure Before You Judge It
A soy candle is not finished when it is solid. It is finished when it has cured.
Curing is the period during which fragrance fully binds into the wax structure. For soy, allow one to two weeks. Paraffin needs less, typically three to five days.
Burning a candle two days after pouring and concluding the fragrance is weak is the most common mistake in candle making, and it is entirely avoidable. Label the jar with the pour date and put it somewhere you will not be tempted by it.
Step 10: Burn Test Properly
Trim the wick to about 6 mm. Light the candle and leave it burning for four hours, which reflects how people actually use candles.
Watch for four things:
- Melt pool. Within two to three hours the melted wax should reach the container wall all the way around. If it does not, your wick is too small and the candle will tunnel.
- Flame height. A steady flame of roughly 2 cm to 3 cm. Tall, flickering, or dancing flames mean the wick is too large.
- Soot. Any black marking on the glass points to an oversized wick or too much fragrance.
- Scent throw. Close the door of a room around 18 square metres and see whether the scent fills it.
Record all of it. Wax weight, fragrance name and percentage, wick size, jar, every temperature, room temperature, cure length, and burn results. Change one variable per test batch and never two, or you will not know which change caused the difference.
Five or six documented batches is usually all it takes to land on a formula you can repeat forever.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to make a candle from start to finish?
About forty minutes of hands-on work. Twenty-four hours to set fully, then one to two weeks of cure time before the fragrance performs at its best. Plan for two weeks between pouring and gifting or selling.
Why is my candle tunnelling down the middle?
Almost always an undersized wick. Move up one size in the same wick family and retest. It can also happen if the very first burn was too short to melt the full surface, so always let a new candle burn until the melt pool reaches the edge.
Can I use any jar I already own?
Only if it is genuinely heat rated for candles. Thrift shop glassware and repurposed food jars can crack under sustained heat, which is a real safety risk for you and anyone you give the candle to. Straight-sided candle jars are also easier to wick correctly.
Why does my soy candle have white patches on top?
That is frosting, a natural crystallization that happens in soy wax. It affects appearance only and has no impact on burn quality or scent. Cooling the candle more slowly reduces it.
How much fragrance oil is too much?
Above roughly 10 percent for most waxes. Overloading does not make a stronger candle. It causes the oil to separate, sweat out of the surface, interfere with the burn, and can create a safety issue. Stay within the manufacturer's stated maximum.
Do I really need a thermometer and a scale?
Yes. Candle making is temperature and weight management. Without them you cannot repeat a good result or diagnose a bad one, which makes every batch a fresh guess rather than a step forward.
