Step 6: Stir for two full minutes. Slowly and thoroughly. Not thirty seconds. Two minutes of gentle stirring is what actually binds the oil into the wax, and it is the cheapest quality upgrade available to you.

Step 7: Cool to pouring temperature. Let the wax drop to the recommended pour temperature, often around 57°C to 63°C (135°F to 145°F) for soy. Pouring too hot causes cracks, sinkholes, and wet spots on the glass.

Step 8: Pour slowly and steadily. A slow, controlled pour reduces air bubbles and gives you a cleaner surface.

Step 9: Leave it alone. Do not move the candle, do not put it in the fridge, do not fan it. Let it cool undisturbed at room temperature, ideally around 21°C (70°F), away from drafts.

Step 10: Cure before burning. Soy candles need one to two weeks of cure time for the fragrance to fully bind. Paraffin needs less, often three to five days. Burning a candle before it cures is the number one reason people think their fragrance is weak when it is not.

The Temperature Rules That Make or Break a Candle

If you remember nothing else, remember this: candle making is temperature management with wax as the medium.

There are three temperatures that matter, and each one does a specific job.

Melt temperature fully liquefies the wax and resets its crystal structure. Overheat it and you damage the wax and burn off fragrance.

Fragrance temperature is the window where oil and wax actually bond. Miss it and your scent throw suffers no matter how much oil you used.

Pour temperature controls how the wax crystallizes as it sets, which determines your surface finish and glass adhesion.

Guessing at any of these is why two makers using identical supplies can get completely different results. A thermometer costs very little and solves most beginner problems on its own.

Common DIY Candle Making Problems and How to Fix Them

Tunnelling. The candle burns down the middle and leaves wax on the sides. Almost always an undersized wick. Size up one and retest. Also make sure the first burn lasts long enough to melt the full surface.

Weak scent throw. Usually one of four causes: not enough cure time, fragrance added at the wrong temperature, insufficient stirring, or a fragrance load that is too low. Check them in that order.

Sinkholes and cracks. You poured too hot or the candle cooled too quickly. Lower your pour temperature and keep the room warmer and draft-free. A small second pour can fix the top of an existing candle.

Wet spots on the glass. Those cloudy patches where wax pulls away from the container are cosmetic, not functional. Warming your vessels slightly before pouring helps considerably.

Frosting. Those white crystalline patches on soy are a natural feature of a natural wax. They do not affect burn quality. Slower cooling reduces them.

Sooting and a tall flame. Your wick is too large for the vessel, or the fragrance load is too high. Size down and trim the wick to about 6 mm before every burn.

Mushrooming on the wick tip. A carbon buildup that usually points to an oversized wick or heavy fragrance. Trim between burns and consider sizing down.

How to Test Properly (and Why It Matters)

Testing is what turns candle making DIY into a genuine skill.

Make small batches of two or three candles at a time when trying a new combination. Change one variable per batch, never two, or you will never know which change caused the result.

Keep a written log for every batch: wax type and weight, fragrance name and percentage, wick size, vessel, melt temperature, fragrance temperature, pour temperature, room temperature, and cure time. Then record burn results: melt pool depth after two hours, flame height, any soot, and scent throw in a closed room.

Burn test in a room of roughly 18 square metres with the door closed and no other scents competing. Test in four-hour sessions, which mirrors how people actually burn candles.
