Soy wax gets recommended to every beginner, and for good reason. It is affordable, easy to work with, and forgiving when your pour temperature is a few degrees off. But "use soy" is where most advice stops, and that is exactly where the real questions start.
Which soy wax? Container or pillar? Why did the last batch frost over? Why does a candle that smelled incredible in the jar throw almost nothing when lit? These are not beginner mistakes so much as gaps in the information most guides hand out.

What Soy Wax Actually Is
Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil. The hydrogenation process turns a liquid oil into a solid at room temperature, which is what makes it usable as a candle wax at all.
It is a vegetable wax, so it is renewable, biodegradable, and cleans up with hot soapy water rather than solvents. That last point sounds minor until you have washed a pouring pitcher three times.
Compared to paraffin, soy burns cooler and slower. A soy candle will typically outlast a paraffin candle of the same size, though it also releases fragrance more gently, which is why fragrance load and cure time matter more with soy than they do with other waxes.
Container Soy vs Pillar Soy
This is the single most common purchasing mistake, and it is worth getting right before you spend anything.
Container soy is formulated to stay soft and cling to the sides of a jar. It has a lower melt point and is designed not to pull away from glass. This is what you want for jars, tins, and any vessel the candle stays in.
Pillar soy is formulated to shrink slightly as it cools so the candle releases cleanly from a mould. Pour it into a jar and it will contract away from the glass, leaving gaps and a poor finish.

How Much Soy Wax You Need
Wax is sold by weight. Jars are measured by volume. The conversion trips people up constantly.
The reliable method is water displacement:
- Fill your empty jar with water to roughly 1 cm below your intended wax line.
- Pour that water onto a scale and note the weight in grams.
- Multiply by 0.86.
That gives you the wax weight in grams. Soy is less dense than water, and 0.86 accounts for the difference.
An 8 oz straight-sided jar generally lands around 200 g of wax. A 16 oz jar sits closer to 400 g. Work it out once per jar style, write it on a card, and you will never repeat the calculation for that container again.
Always melt a little more than you need. Soy leaves residue in the pitcher, and running short mid-pour is far more annoying than having 20 g left over.
Temperatures That Matter
Soy is forgiving, but only within a range. Three numbers do most of the work.
Melt to 77 to 82 °C. High enough for the wax to melt fully and evenly, not so high that you degrade it. Use a double boiler or a wax melter rather than direct heat on the element.
Add fragrance at around 82 °C. The wax needs to be hot enough for the oil to bind properly. Adding fragrance to cooler wax is the leading cause of weak scent throw and oily patches on the surface.
Pour between 54 and 63 °C. Pouring too hot causes sinkholes and cracking as the candle contracts. Pouring too cold gives you a lumpy, uneven top. Most container soys sit happily around 57 °C.
A thermometer is not optional here. Guessing by eye is how batches get wasted.
Fragrance Load for Soy Wax
Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil measured against the weight of the wax, not the finished candle.
Wax weight × 0.08 = fragrance weight
So 200 g of soy needs 16 g of fragrance oil at an 8 percent load. Soy will generally hold between 6 and 10 percent, and most container soys are rated to about 10 percent maximum.
Do not exceed the rated load. Excess oil does not make a stronger candle, it separates out, pools on the surface, and creates a fire hazard once lit.
Weigh fragrance on a digital scale rather than measuring by volume. Oils vary in density, so a spoon measure is not repeatable batch to batch. A scale accurate to one gram costs less than a bag of wax and pays for itself immediately.
Oil quality matters more with soy than with paraffin, because soy is already a gentler thrower. Oils formulated and tested specifically for wax will bind and vaporize far better than a generic scent, which is why it is worth choosing from fragrance oils tested in candle applications.
Stir for a full two minutes after adding fragrance. Slow, steady stirring, not vigorous whisking. Under-stirring leaves unbound oil in the mix and shows up as poor throw two weeks later.
Wicking Soy Correctly
Soy burns cooler than paraffin, which means it usually needs a slightly larger wick than a paraffin candle of the same diameter.
Wick choice depends on three things: jar diameter, wax type, and fragrance load. Diameter does most of the work. Measure across the inside of your jar and start from the manufacturer's chart, then test.
Testing is unavoidable. Burn the candle for three to four hours and check for a full melt pool that reaches the edges. If a rim of unmelted wax remains, size up. If the flame is tall, flickering, or producing soot, size down.

Soy needs time. The wax continues to crystallize and bind with the fragrance oil for days after the pour.

Common Soy Wax Problems
Frosting. Those white crystalline patches on the surface and sides are natural to soy, a sign of a genuine vegetable wax. They are cosmetic only. Cooling the candle more slowly and pouring at a slightly lower temperature reduces it, but no soy is completely frost-free.
Wet spots. Cloudy patches where the wax has pulled away from the glass. Caused by rapid cooling. Warm your jars before pouring and let candles cool at room temperature, away from drafts.
Sinkholes. Cavities that form around the wick as the candle contracts. Pour a little cooler, or hold back roughly 10 percent of your wax for a second top-up pour once the first has set.
